RMI National Immunization Program Launches Effective Vaccine Management (EVM) Training

Majuro, Marshall Islands – The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) proudly announces the launch of its Effective Vaccine Management (EVM) Training Program, marking a significant advancement in our nation’s immunization efforts. The opening ceremony on August 5, 2024, signals the start of a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing vaccine supply chain management and ensuring the highest standards of safety for immunizations across the country.

This EVM Training Program, organized by the RMI National Immunization Program and led by Immunization Director Ms. Noatia Siofilisi, is designed to equip healthcare professionals with essential skills and knowledge for efficient and effective vaccine management. Aligning with global standards, this initiative seeks to optimize vaccine delivery, minimize waste, and uphold rigorous quality standards.

The ceremony began with a heartfelt blessing from MOHHS Chaplain Mr. Biwij John. MOHHS Secretary Mrs. Francyne Wase-Jacklick delivered the keynote address, acknowledging the new Director for the RMI National Immunization Program, Ms. Noatia Siofilisi for her leadership and expressing her strong support for the EVM training and ongoing immunization efforts.

In her remarks, Secretary Wase-Jacklick stated, “As we launch this vital training program, let us be inspired by our Marshallese wisdom of ‘Añak Ka,’ which represents the wind coming from all directions. This spirit of unity and comprehensive effort guides us as we address every challenge in vaccine management with determination and a collective approach. By working together, we will ensure that our immunization strategies are effective and inclusive, reaching every corner of our nation.”

UNICEF Representative Dr. Abba Zakari Umar, based in RMI MOHHS, acknowledged the collective efforts that made the EVM training possible, commending all involved for their commitment.

The EVM Training Program, running from August 5th to August 8th, 2024, will focus on practical skills and real-world applications. Participants will engage in hands-on training covering crucial aspects such as cold chain equipment management, vaccine distribution, forecasting, data management, and outreach services. This training is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of healthcare professionals and strengthen the RMI National Immunization Program.

Key Highlights of the EVM Training:

1. Training Objectives: The program will address essential elements of vaccine management, including inventory control, distribution strategies, and data management. Participants will receive targeted training to overcome specific challenges faced in the Marshall Islands.

Majuro, MH – The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) proudly marked a significant achievement at the 15th Triennial Pacific Women Leaders Conference with the successful launch of its Cervical Cancer Elimination Policy & Strategy. Held on Wednesday, July 24th this historic event brought together leaders, healthcare professionals, and community members in a powerful demonstration of commitment to women’s health.

The day commenced with an engaging and culturally resonant program featuring keynotes, panel discussions, and moving performances. Secretary Francyne Wase-Jacklick of the Ministry of Health and Human Services welcomed attendees with a heartfelt message, emphasizing the profound importance of the Cervical Cancer Policy and the collective efforts that have brought us to this milestone.

The side event featured a panel discussion moderated by Neiar Kabua, Director of the RMI National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. The distinguished panelists included:

Dr. Frank Underwood, Public Health Medical Director, who provided a comprehensive overview of the cervical cancer situation in the Marshall Islands.
Dr. Mateen Shaheen, Deputy Director for the Pacific Subregional Office at the UNFPA Pacific Office in Fiji, who outlined the new Cervical Cancer Policy and its crucial implications for our nation.
Dr. Merlyn Abello Alfonso, Congresswoman from the Federated States of Micronesia, and Senator Perpetua Sappa Konman, both trained doctors committed to utilizing their expertise to enhance their communities.

They shared invaluable experiences and best practices from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), offering practical insights and strategies to advance our fight against cervical cancer.

The discussions were followed by a dynamic Q&A session, where attendees engaged deeply on topics of prevention and treatment. A special performance by RMI’s Cancer Support Group added a poignant and uplifting touch, reflecting the Marshallese spirit of solidarity and resilience.

The climax of the event was the ceremonial launch of the Cervical Cancer Policy, led by Her Excellency President Dr. Hilda C. Heine. Her presence underscored the immense importance of this policy and her steadfast commitment to improving health outcomes for our nation. The formal adoption of the policy was a powerful symbol of our shared dedication to a future free from cervical cancer.

Dr. Wilfred Alik, Presidential Envoy for Primary Care & Disease Prevention, delivered a stirring call to action that resonated with all in attendance. His passionate address urged a united front in the fight against cervical cancer, emphasizing that the policy represents not only a strategic plan but a pledge to enact meaningful change in our communities. He called on all sectors—government, healthcare providers, and the public—to collaborate, support, and drive forward this critical initiative with renewed commitment and vigor.

Majuro, MH – The Ministry of Health and Human Services of the Republic of the Marshall Islands is pleased to announce the successful commencement of the 2nd Annual Tole Mour Leadership Conference 2024, held under the theme "Innovate, Collaborate, Transform: Charting a Future of Health Equity." The conference, inaugurated by Hon. Ota Kisino, Minister of Health and Human Services, marks a significant milestone in advancing healthcare strategies and community well-being.

The opening ceremony, attended by esteemed guests including key community leaders, technical partners from PIHOA, the World Bank, and UNICEF, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery and achieving sustainable health outcomes. The conference’s brand, "Tole Mour," meaning "Gift of Life," embodies the Ministry’s dedication to improving health services through innovation and collaborative efforts.

Hon. Ota Kisino emphasized the importance of assessing progress under the Ministry’s Strategic Plan, celebrating achievements, acknowledging challenges, and identifying areas for improvement. Discussions focused on prioritizing MSP reform strategies for FY2025, with an emphasis on embracing innovation to address evolving healthcare needs effectively. The importance of accountability was underscored as leadership shared results of reforms, detailing progress, challenges, and proposed solutions moving forward.
Ms. Emi Chutaro, Executive Director of the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association (PIHOA), shared during the conference that MoHHS leadership should not be disheartened by the scores presented to management but should feel proud that accountability is being addressed at the highest level, commending leadership for its efforts.

Directors were empowered to present innovative ideas for enhancing healthcare delivery, fostering a culture of cross-departmental collaboration, and sharing best practices. Technical partners assessed these presentations and notable reports. At the conclusion of the conference, awards were bestowed, recognizing outstanding achievements. Mela Ratu from the Ebeye Immunization Department received the Notable Achievement Award, while Hermon Schmidt was honored with the Innovative Award.
The conference also featured a Mini TA Partner Round Table, facilitating discussions on resource mobilization and technical assistance to support reform efforts aligned with donor priorities.

Throughout the conference, partnered community leaders shared their valuable perspectives on leadership. Ms. Marie Maddison provided insights into cultural perspectives on Day 2, Pastor Russell Edwards, former Health Planner, shared his experience in health leadership and transition to faith-based leadership on Day 3, and Mrs. Ariana Kilma from the National Nuclear Commission offered youth leadership perspectives also on Day 3.

Additionally, the conference featured a panel discussion titled "MOHHS MSP Implementation: Fostering Collaborations with Ministry Partners for Accelerated Actions." Panelists included Mr. Richard Bruce, Deputy Chief Secretary; Mrs. Ayako Yamaguchi-Eliou, Secretary of Finance, Banking & Postal Services; Ms. Davina Nathan, Attorney General Office; Mrs. Amenta Matthew, PSC Commissioner; Ms. Mercyba Balos, Director of Immigration; and Mr. Travis Joe, Director of Labor. The panel discussion explored collaborative strategies to accelerate the Ministry’s MSP implementation, emphasizing the importance of partnership and coordination across government agencies.

In closing, Minister Kisino reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to "Kumiti Ejmour," or "Health is a Shared Responsibility," emphasizing the importance of sustained teamwork, coordination, and collaboration as demonstrated during the successful hosting of the 10th Micronesian Olympic Games. Participants were encouraged to develop actionable plans for implementing reform strategies, ensuring alignment with the Ministry’s strategic vision.

The first day of this three-day event was marked by compelling presentations from Secretary of Health & Human Services, Mrs. Francyne Wase-Jacklick, and National Nuclear Commission, Republic of the Marshall Islands Chair, Mrs. Ariana Tibon Kilma.

As Nuclear Champions, both leaders addressed the profound impacts of the RMI Nuclear Legacy on women and girls. Commissioner Kilma delivered a heartfelt overview of the nuclear legacy, sharing powerful personal stories and health experiences from those affected. Her presentation underscored the urgent need to recognize and address the ongoing health challenges stemming from historical nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands.

Secretary Wase-Jacklick provided a forward-looking perspective, connecting the historical nuclear legacy to contemporary health policies and initiatives. “We must remember that the legacy of nuclear testing continues to affect our people, especially our women and girls,” Secretary Wase-Jacklick stated. “It is crucial that we address these impacts with compassion and resolve, ensuring that our health policies are informed by both our history and our commitment to a healthier future.”

Following a brief pause during the holiday season, the medical staff of Leroij Atama Hospital reconvened for their first Medical Grand Rounds of 2024. During this interactive session, physicians shared special medical cases, engaged in vibrant discussions, and explored innovative approaches to patient care. The event provided a valuable forum for practitioners to refine their diagnostic skills, enhance treatment strategies, and address complex medical challenges collectively.

A highlight of the Medical Grand Rounds was a captivating lecture delivered by Dr. Jeffrey Ing, an esteemed Ophthalmologist representing the renowned Canvasback Medical Mission.
