Republic of the Marshall Islands Ministry of Health & Human Services Attends 2024 Pacific Islands TB Controllers Association Conference in Pohnpei, FSM
Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia – October 29, 2024
The Ministry of Health & Human Services (MOHHS) proudly participated in the 2024 Pacific Islands TB Controllers Association (PITCA) Conference, hosted in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Under the theme "TB on the Move," this year’s conference brought together TB experts and health leaders from across the Pacific to share innovative strategies for TB control, prevention, and treatment, with a focus on collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Led by RMI’s Public Health Medical Director, Dr. Frank Underwood, the RMI delegation presented updates on the country’s extensive mass TB screening efforts, which have been successfully completed in Majuro, Ebeye, Arno, Wotje, Jaluit, Aur, Ailinglaplap, and Jabat Atolls, with screenings set to begin in Mili Atoll in early November. These comprehensive screenings mark significant progress in RMI’s commitment to combating TB and improving health outcomes across the nation.
"RMI MOHHS is dedicated to eliminating TB as a public health threat in our communities," said Dr. Underwood. "The 'TB on the Move' conference has offered valuable insights and strengthened our partnerships with Pacific neighbors, reinforcing our shared vision of a TB-free Pacific."
In addition to contributing to conference discussions, RMI MOHHS announced that it will host the upcoming USAPI Regional TB Training in early December in Majuro, an event that underscores RMI’s active role in TB education and capacity building across the Pacific. This training will bring together healthcare professionals from the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) to strengthen regional knowledge and practices in TB prevention and control.
RMI MOHHS extends its gratitude to the FSM for hosting this year’s PI-TBCA Conference and to the Pacific Islands TB Controllers Association for its continued leadership in addressing TB in the region. Together, Pacific nations remain committed to building healthier, TB-free communities through unity and collaboration.
