Majuro, Marshall Islands — July 22, 2024 — The Ministry of Health and Human Services is proud to announce that the 15th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women, currently underway in Majuro, has featured a significant session on the Health of Women and Girls. The first day of this three-day event was marked by compelling presentations from Secretary of Health & Human Services, Mrs. Francyne Wase-Jacklick, and National Nuclear Commission, Republic of the Marshall Islands Chair, Mrs. Ariana Tibon Kilma.
As Nuclear Champions, both leaders addressed the profound impacts of the RMI Nuclear Legacy on women and girls. Commissioner Kilma delivered a heartfelt overview of the nuclear legacy, sharing powerful personal stories and health experiences from those affected. Her presentation underscored the urgent need to recognize and address the ongoing health challenges stemming from historical nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands.
Secretary Wase-Jacklick provided a forward-looking perspective, connecting the historical nuclear legacy to contemporary health policies and initiatives. “We must remember that the legacy of nuclear testing continues to affect our people, especially our women and girls,” Secretary Wase-Jacklick stated. “It is crucial that we address these impacts with compassion and resolve, ensuring that our health policies are informed by both our history and our commitment to a healthier future.”
She further emphasized, “Our focus is not just on remembering the past but on shaping a path forward. The work we do today will have lasting effects on our community, and it is our duty to ensure that the lessons of the past guide us towards a brighter and healthier future for all.”
This session was a pivotal start to the three-day conference, setting the stage for further discussions and workshops on women’s health and leadership. The insights shared by both Secretary Wase-Jacklick and Commissioner Kilma highlighted the conference’s commitment to advancing health and well-being in our region.
