Marshall Islands Medical Assistance Team (MI-MAT) Launches Week-Long Cache Training with WHO Support

Majuro, Marshall Islands – 13 May 2024 – The Marshall Islands Medical Assistance Team (MI-MAT) proudly announces the commencement of a week-long Cache Training, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). This intensive training program brings together vital stakeholders including members from the Ministry of Health, the Marshall Islands Red Cross Society (MIRCS), and the Palau Medical Assistance Team (KLEMAT).

The training aims to equip MI-MAT with a comprehensive "cache" of emergency medical equipment and supplies, ensuring the team is self-sufficient and prepared for rapid deployment in response to emergencies. The cache will enable MI-MAT to provide immediate medical assistance, improving resilience and response capabilities within the Marshall Islands and the broader Pacific region.

Dr. Robert Maddison, Medical Chief of Staff, emphasized the significance of the training, stating, "This program is crucial for enhancing our emergency response infrastructure. With WHO's support and collaboration from our partners, we are strengthening our capacity to effectively manage and respond to health crises."

The Marshall Islands Red Cross Society and KLEMAT will play integral roles in the training, sharing their expertise and experiences to foster a collaborative and comprehensive learning environment. This partnership underscores a commitment to regional solidarity and mutual aid in times of disaster.

"Building a robust emergency response team is vital for our communities," remarked Rambo Phillip, MIRCS Disaster Response Coordinator. "Through this training, we are not only preparing our teams but also reinforcing the importance of coordination and cooperation in crisis situations."

The World Health Organization's support underscores the global importance of preparedness and the need for well-equipped and trained medical teams ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. "We are committed to supporting the Marshall Islands in enhancing their emergency medical response capabilities," said Mr. Anthony Cook, WHO Western Pacific Region EMT Consultant Training and Technical Support. "This training is a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared goal of protecting and saving lives."

The week-long training will include hands-on sessions, simulations, and strategic planning exercises, all designed to ensure that MI-MAT can operate effectively and independently during emergencies. Participants will gain practical skills and knowledge, enhancing their ability to deliver critical medical care in challenging environments.
